Specializing in renovating historic buildings

112-114 E. Fourteenth Street; 1401, 1404, 1412, 1414, and 1418 Walnut Street,  Cincinnati, Ohio

Walnut Square is in the heart of revitalizing Over-the-Rhine, a neighborhood with a thriving arts scene, an entertainment district, and the country’s largest collection of historic Italianate architecture. The landmark Music Hall, Memorial Hall, Ensemble Theatre, School for the Creative & Performing Arts, Know Theatre, Enjoy the Arts advocacy organization, and numerous art, furniture, and photography galleries all are located within a few blocks of Walnut Square. Locally owned venues offer a range of dining and nightlife options, including the jazz-and-blues haven Mr. Pitiful’s, the eclectic Kaldi’s coffeehouse, and the laid-back Westminster’s Billiards. The streets of Over-the-Rhine are lined with graceful architecture featuring bracketed cornices, elaborate stone and brick detailing, arched windows, and decorative entrances. Many buildings in the neighborhood are currently or recently have undergone renovations for both apartments and condominiums. The recent arrival of the Art Academy of Cincinnati to its newly rehabilitated campus at 12th and Jackson streets has created a major new landmark for the neighborhood.

The Neighborhood

Over-the-Rhine is an urban core neighborhood next door to downtown Cincinnati. The neighborhood dates back to the mid-nineteenth century, when German immigrants began to settle here. Indeed, the name “Over-the-Rhine” originally was a reference to the Germanic character of the densely populated urban community.

One of the best places to see the full scope of Over-the-Rhine’s offerings is historic Findlay Market. Ohio’s oldest continuously operated public market and one of Cincinnati’s most cherished institutions, the Market is located on Elder Street between Elm and Race, just blocks from downtown. Open Wednesday through Saturday, Findlay Market is home year-around to about two dozen merchants selling meat, fish, poultry, produce, flowers, cheese, deli, ethnic, and gourmet foods. On Saturdays from April to November, the Market hosts a thriving farmers market, dozens of outdoor vendors, numerous street performers, and special events.

Over-the-Rhine also is nationally noted for its collection of commercial, residential, religious and civic architecture, which comprises one of America’s largest and most cohesive examples of an urban nineteenth-century community. Similar neighborhoods in other cities have been decimated or lost entirely. But in Over-the-Rhine, the streets of block after block are lined with rows of three-to five-story brick buildings. Many buildings still have storefronts on the first floor with residential space on the upper floors. The Italianate style is the predominant architectural style in the district, and other nineteenth-century styles, including Federal, Greek Revival, Second Empire, Queen Anne, and Renaissance Revival, are prominent as well.
